Dreaming of a Family Holiday in Lapland

The ultimate destination for a family vacation in Finland is, without a doubt, Lapland! I’m not sure if this term has been used before, but I’ve just coined it for myself: weather escape. Every year, the struggle through the dark winters gets worse. The mind is foggy, both internally and externally – nothing but perpetual darkness. So, I’m sending a wish to the universe to become a weather escapee next winter, to go where you can experience a real winter – Lapland.

A Craving for Lapland Magic

I’ve actually been dreaming of a trip to Lapland for a few years now. We spent many winters and even a summer in Lapland during my childhood. Maybe it’s a memory adorned by a child’s mind, but I have this vividly “magical” image of Lapland. Beautiful landscapes, abundant snow, fells, and crisp, fresh air. Even though the temperatures often reached 20-30 degrees below zero, you didn’t feel the cold.

Dreams rarely materialize on their own, so I took the dream into action. After contemplating the idea more and researching various destinations in Lapland, I narrowed down my options to Ruka, Levi, and Pyhä. Ruka and Levi are dream destinations for skiers, like us. However, as we have a very young family member, the final choice became Pyhä tunturi , where there seems to be a bit of everything – great ski slopes and plenty more to experience and see.

Choosing a Cabin in Lapland, Finland

Then comes the accommodation… One probably has to plan these things almost a year in advance, as different accommodation websites seemed to have bookings even a year ahead. There are cabins, apartments, townhouses, duplexes… Our preference is undoubtedly our own cabin, where there aren’t immediate neighbors behind the walls and possibly not right in front of the yard either:)

We found a suitable cabin quite close to the Pyhä fell. The cabin seems to have everything we need: location, size, amenities. So, the vacation is quite sorted. Now, we need to think about how to get there, but we still have time to plan that. The journey is over 800 kilometers, so with three children, we’d prefer the most comfortable ride possible. The train isn’t an option due to costs and also because it doesn’t go all the way.
